Our librarians develop Teen Fiction Reading Kits and Resource Lists on topics such as “Comic & Graphic Novels”, “Chick Lit”, “Adventure Stories for Boys”, “Managing Stress”, “Handling Project Work”, and much more.

Mentor Programmes
We mentor our youth volunteers in areas like the selection of books and audio-visual materials for the Teens Library, planning library programmes, and other special projects at the library.

Volunteer Opportunities
Our network of public libraries also offers volunteer opportunities to students who need to fulfill Community Involvement Programme (CIP) hours as part of the school curriculum.

Through our blog for teens (blogs.nlb.gov.sg/yo), we aim to connect and engage young people to resources that they would find useful to their overall developmental needs.

Librarian Services – Children

To nurture a love for reading and lifelong learning in children, NLB’s Children’s Services has continued to expand our available range of programmes and services. In addition to telling good stories, we have also started to focus on holistic literacy development through interactive workshops by librarians on story dramatization, author highlights, reader profiling, introduction to fiction genre and story writing. To supplement the regular programmes at the libraries, new reading initiatives are being rolled out and these include: Junior Reading Clubs, Annual Asian Children’s Festival and Born to Read, Read to Bond programme where parents take an active participation in their child’s reading development. Regular children’s reading clubs (in English, Malay and Mandarin) and kidsREAD clubs have also been started.

With numerous materials being published every year, our Children’s Services aim to promote good literature to children through publishing our own bibliographies, booklists, pathfinders, monthly posters as well as the quarterly newsletter called Hooked On Tales to highlight authors and their works.

And what if you need answers to all your questions? Our advisory service, kidsASK!, is not only available to provide children with advice on good age-appropriate books and tips on reading, librarians also answer any form of reference questions posed to them via email, phone, enquiry forms or face-to-face.

As we recognise that schools and parents are important conduits to inculcate the reading habit in children. Our librarians work with schools to conduct a series of fun-filled activities such as mass borrowing, educational tours, storytelling, introduction of library services during assembly talks, book-talking, reader profiling which are all aimed at enticing children to pick up books to read. Parents too can play a part by participating in library-organized parenting workshops like Raise-A-Reader, Parenting Reading Coach Club and Family Interest Groups.

With the above service offerings, NLB Children’s Services sets its vision high to be the immediate choice for children’s reading and informational needs.
